Part of Ed Bearinger conscientious objector photo collection
This photo is of a tall dead tree with a smoldering fire on top. These trees were known as snags and it was the job of conscientious objectors in WWII to cut these down so that sparks were not spread causing forest fires. A small coniferous tree is in the foreground.
