Administrative history
Three regional genealogy sub-committees (Steinbach, Winkler/Altona, and Winnipeg) were organized around 1984. The committees promoted family history through hosting workshops in the various regions. Annually all the committees would meet as a "central committee" to plan a joint genealogical seminar, and also to promote and judge the high school essay writing competition which had been established around 1981 (Henry E. Plett award). After 1995 the regional committees no longer functioned, but a reorganized Genealogy and Family History Committee assumed the mandate to promote family history and genealogy in all areas of interest in Manitoba. The re-organized committee also initiated projects which consisted of translating original documents into English such as the Molotschna 1835 Census and other selected documents from the Peter J. Braun Russian Archive and the St. Petersburg Microfilming Project. It published Mennonite Migration to Russia 1788-1828 by Peter Rempel (Moscow) edited by Richard D. Thiessen and Alfred H. Redekopp in 2000.
