These letters, on microform were obtained from St. Petersburg. They were translated from French by Alvin Peter Harms of Calgary, Professor of French. They were transcribed to paper copies and donated to John B. Toews.

Note

Mennonites were promised farm land and exemption from military service in Russia, so sought to emigrate en mass from Prussia to settle in south Russia. Five hundred persons left as soon as passports were issued, on August 18, 1803. Hundreds more followed in subsequent years.
