Biographical history

Delton Franz was born in 1932 to John J. and Sara Siemens Franz in Hutchinson, Kansas. He graduated from Bethel College (North Newton, Kansas) in 1954 and married Marian Claassen. He moved to Chicago to pastor Woodlawn Mennonite Church and attend Mennonite Biblical Seminary in 1954. Franz pastored at Woodlawn until 1968, when he moved to Washington, D. C. to serve as the first director of the Mennonite Central Committee Washington Office. He served as Mennonite Central Committee's primary liaison to the U. S. federal government until his retirement in 1994.

Throughout his career, Franz's work focused on race relations and peacemaking. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement and was a Mennonite pioneer in interracial and urban ministry. Franz also was a founding member of Churches for Middle East Peace.

Franz died in 2006.
