Scope and content

This is a photo the the city of Danzig, with its taste for art for centuries served our forebears as a cultural centre. The Artusplace with the Artuswell in front of it enjoyed great fame. Across from them stood the house in which the writer of fables, Robert Reinike was born. Then we find the massive Marienchurch. The names of the streets are often rather peculiar. "Frogslough", "Dogstreet", "Longstreet", "Broadstreet", the latter one known for the small platforms in front of each door as shown on the photo. From here our forebears transplanted this little platform in Russia. No self-respecting Mennonite farmer's home was without it. [HR 7]
