The theme chosen for the conference, "Jesus Christ Reconciles" was ironic because the 9th world conference experienced difficulties resulting from cultural and theological differences among conference delegates. Some individuals questioned the usefulness of world conferences and wondered whether they should continue, but the delegates decisively reaffirmed the meetings. However, the 1972 conference did result in major changes in the conference structure to allow greater representation, especially of Third World Mennonites, in conference planning.
