Biographical history
Missionary to India from 1905-1934, and again in 1945-1948. Minister at Pleasant Hill Mennonite Church, East Peoria, Illinois beginning in 1935. Later he was ordained bishop and continued in service there until 1963. He and his wife moved to Goshen, Indiana in 1959. He was married twice. His first wife, Elsie Drange, he met and married in 1909 in India. She died in 1939. His second wife was Dr. Lillie Shenk whom he married in 1941. He had three children by his first wife, Russell, Paul, and Kathryn.

Lillie Shenk Kaufman was born 13 June 1899 to Abram J. and Malinda Good Shenk in Elida, Ohio. She grew up in Elida attending the public schools there through her third year of high school. She received her diploma from Goshen Academy in 1920.
She committed herself at an early age for missionary service and attended Goshen College, 1920-21; University of Virginia, 1921-22; and Bridgewater College, 1922-23. She graduated from Womens' Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1930. Lillie worked as a physician at the Laurelton State Village for girls, near Allentown, PA and then went to East Africa under the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities (Mennonite Church) in 1934 to pioneer the medical work at Shirati, Tanganyika (Tanzania).
After four years in Africa, Lillie returned to the United States and practiced medicine for eighteen years in Fisher and East Peoria, IL. In 1941 she married J. Norman Kaufman and together they served in India (1945-1948) in medical work at the Dhamtari Christian Hospital. The Kaufmans retired in Goshen where Lillie died 13 February 1971.

A set of family papers documenting the lives of Charles L. Shank, his first wife, Crissie Yoder Shank, his second wife, Lydia F. Shenk Shank, the Shank children, Lydia Shank's sister and brother-in-law (Lillie and James Norman Kaufman), and other assorted Shank family members. Materials include incoming correspondence documenting Mennonite missionary work, photographs, school materials, circle letters circulated among the Shank's children, articles and other writings of Lydia Shank, collected prayers of international Christian women in the 1950s, a number of sound recordings of funerals and memorial services, and other miscellaneous family materials.
