History

John B. Braun, church deacon, teacher and farmer, was born on January 18, 1897 in Eigengrund school district, east of Altona. He was one of four children born to Abram and Anna Braun. In 1917, Braun was baptized by Aeltester Abram Doerksen of the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. He married Anna Neufeld on October 24, 1920 and their marriage produced 13 children. In 1927 he bought a farm three miles from Altona where he lived until 1960. In 1949 Braun was ordained as deacon, and served in this capacity for 25 years. Braun also served the church and community through extensive travelling to raise funds for the many boards on which he sat. These included: being trustee and secretary treasurer of the Schoenau School District; Altona Bethania Hospital; Elim Bible School; Rhineland Consumers Co-op; Salem Home, Winkler; Ebenezer Home. He and his wife retired from farming in 1960 and moved to Altona. In addition to his many years of service, Braun is remembered for his love of gospel singing which he did often. John B. Braun died in 1982.
