Henry H. Funk (left) and Irwin Schmidt are at the entrance of a home

Henry H. Funk (left) and Irwin Schmidt are at the entrance to a home built by Isaac Fast, a hermit who lived along the Saskatchewan River at the Gabriel Ferry Crossing near Batoche. It is dated Oct. 23, 1965 but was not used in the CM. The entrance consists of a wooden frame of logs, covered with dirt and grass as if the home were were built into a hillside. It is only as high as the man standing in the entrance. The first Mennonite prairie settlers built similar homes or sod huts (called semlins in German?).
