Conference of Mennonites in Canada. Board of Christian Service

The Board of Christian Service was created in 1954 as an amalgamation of committees including Dienstkomitee (Service Committtee), Komittee fuer Armenpflege (Committee for the Care of the Poor), and Komitee fuer Nothlife (Mennonite Central Relief Committee). It merged into the Congregational Resources Board in 1971.

Founded 1953 as an amalgamation of committees whose responsibilities included publications, church music, Sunday school, and visual aids. H.T. Klassen was the secretary from 1953-1961, and executive secretary from 1962-1965. He was followed by Henry H. Epp (1966-1971). This board was merged into the Congregational Resources Board in 1971.

Conference of Mennonites in Canada. Committee on the ministry

The Committee on the Ministry was created in 1963. The committee grew out of study commissioned by the Conference Executive on "Calling, Ordination and functions of ministers and bishops." The committee was to guide the conference toward a new uniform practise, as local ministers were authorized to do more and more of the functions earlier performed only by the bishop, and as congregations were moving to a one-salaried pastor arrangement.
The name changed to the Committee on Ministerial Leadership in 1983.

In 1971 the Congregational Resources Board was created when the Board of Christian Service, Board of Education and Publications and home missions functions of the Board of Missions merged. In 1994 it was renamed the Resources Commission. Executive Secretaries were:

  • Eleanor Loewen (interm 1983)
  • Rudy A. Regehr (1984-1992)
  • Tym Elias (1993-1995)
  • Robert J. Suderman (1996-1999).
