Boldt, Peter, 1892-1961

Peter Boldt was born March 6, 1892 to Johann Boldt (1853-1923) and Maria Bartel (1853-1922) in the village of Kronsgarten, Chortitza colony, South Russia. In 1912 the family moved to Siberia and Peter was baptised in 1913 in Schoensee, Baenaul. The following year, on June 29, 1914 Peter married Anna Braun (1893-1951) and between 1917 and 1932 they had 11 children together. In December 1924 the Boldt family arrived in Canada on the S.S. Minnedosa. The went to Holdfast, SK for a few months and then relocated to Gretna, MB where Peter attended the Mennonite Collegiate Institute (MCI) to learn English. In 1927 the family moved to Manitou, MB to attend Normal School so Peter could get his Canadian teaching certificate. After graduation, the family moved to Standoff, Alberta where Peter got a job on the Hutterite colony as a teacher in their one-room school house for grades 1-8. He taught in Standoff for 32 years. He died in 1961 after suffering a heart attack. Son Edward Boldt became a sociologist with a focus on Hutterite communities.
