BOX 19, FOLDER 1 This Description represents a later version of the original notes--a somewhat edited and perhaps more complete version--as compared to the Items listed under Folder 1. Thick [5/8”] folder. Some of the following information comes from the German-language Wikipedia (possibly read inaccurately by this annotator): D. Heinrich Bornkamm (1901-1977) was a German evangelical [i.e. Protestant] scholar who specialized in research on Luther. After some time as a Professor and also Rector at University of Giessen, during the Nazi era [apparently, from Wikipedia] he somehow became entangled with National Socialism and its German Christian Church. From 1948 to 1969 [i.e. over the time of this folder] he taught Church History at Bender’s alma mater the University of Heidelberg. He served as president of the “Evangelischen Bundes” [Protestant Union] and from 1958 to 1960 was Chairman of the Heildelberg Academy of Sciences. This folder’s material is almost entirely typed German. Be advised that this annotator’s German is not strong; therefore his notes are incomplete and quite possibly inaccurate at points. {1} Bender to D. Heinrich Bornkamm, May 10, 1948: seems to propose that as Chairman of the Verein für Reformationsgechichte [Reformation History Society], Bornkamm should support a project having to do with documents of south German Anabaptists--working with a Commission of Mennonite Historical Societies [Kommission des Mennonitischen Geschichtvereins] consisting of Bender, Ernst Crous of Göttingen, and Parson E. Teufel of Stuttgart-Fellbach [Parson Eberhard Teufel]; some background information; cc’s to Teufel and Crous. {2} Reply, D. Heinrich Bornkamm September 3, 1955 [stationery of Mennonitische Forschungsstelle Göttingen (Mennonite Research Center of Göttingen)]: via the manuscript department of the local university library in the person of cand. min. Wilhelm Brunotte ... [his address, and more] he had gotten a suitable person for the article on the Hutterite mansuscri0pt...; needed $100 by mid-October...; written in haste. {65} Bender to D. Heinrich Bornkamm, September 9, 1955: you have a carbon copy of the September 3 letter from Crous [Ernst Crous] about finding Mr. Wilhelm Brunotte for the Hutterite manuscript...; about whether Americans or your treasury should pay; more about dealing with this article; mention Mr. Fast [? Henry Fast, H. A. Fast, Henry A. Fast] at Zurich; would like news about Parson Teufel [Eberhard Teufel]; cc to Ernst Crous. {66} D. Heinrich Bornkamm to Bender, Ernst Crous, Krahn, Krebs [Cornelius Krahn, ?? Manfred Krebs ??], January 23, 1956: recently more questions had emerged regarding the Täufer-Akten, so let me report briefly...; the best news was about the half-volume of Alsace materials--(elaborated at length) mentioning Drs. Krebs and Rott [?? Gerhard Goeters ?] had written to me that his dissertation is finished and inquired about publishing it in a series on Reformation history ...(elaborated); another paragraph on Anabaptist documents; reference to printing the Alsace Täufer-Akten and the Denck writings. {67} Bender to D. Heinrich Bornkamm, February 1, 1956: glad for the report; on numbers to print; Robert Friedmann had received all the remaining hand-written manuscripts of Lydia Müller’s [Lydia Mueller] volume II--it would be only a small volume, and Bender suggested it be the third to print; more such comments, then discussion of finances; cc’s to Crous, Krahn, and Krebs [Ernst Crous, Cornelius Krahn, ?? Manfred Krebs ??]. {68} Reply, D. Heinrich Bornkamm to Bender, February 21, 1956: about Bender’s coming this summer and possible meeting in June in Heidelberg or Karlsruhe...; about printing manuscripts; mention that of Parson Fellmann [I. Heinrich Bornkamm, April 16, 1956: about a small copier bill received from Dr. Crous [Ernst Crous] for Robert Friedmann’s work on his Hutterite volume; please send Crous the 24.05 German Marks; cc to Crous. {70} D. Heinrich Bornkamm, June 22, 1956 [dateline Mennonite Historical Society, Goshen--but appears to have been typed at MCC headquarters in Frankfurt]: following up our conversation yesterday in Heidelberg, was furnishing the account for copying two volumes of Täufer-Akten--Volume II of volume by Lydia Müller [Lydia Mueller], work of Robert Friedman, and “Porto”; send the money to MCC [Mennonite Central Committee] at Frankfurt, etc.; glad they could have the meeting of the TAK [Täufer-Akten Kommission], hoped next meeting could be at a time when all members could take part; cc to Ernst Crous. {73} [Fragment (first page) of Bender to D. Heinrich Bornkamm, December 10, 1956: Robert Friedmann had delivered the full texts of the second volume of his and Lydia Müller’s [Lydia Mueller] “Glaubenzeugnisse Oberdeutscher Täufer”; a question about Parson Müller’s relation to Lydia’s manuscript--details, including relation to Friedmann.... [What probably is second page now found:] mention of Lydia Müller’s first volume, but now an especially important item in Anabaptist theologically writing important had come to light; to understand and evaluate Anabaptist belief, this volume would be valuable; you may think that this volume would be expensive, but Hutterite congregations in North America would have a special interest in it... (some practical remarks, e.g., how many copies); more about possible finances.... {74} D. Heinrich Bornkamm to “Herr Hostetler at MCC’s Frankfurt address, February 12, 1957: reference to your card of January 28 [not extant here] saying the 300 German Marks Bender had [left were depleted ??]; gave account of spending them for Volume II by Lydia Müller [Lydia Mueller], work of Robert Friedman, and “Porto”.... {75} D. Heinrich Bornkamm to Bender, March 5, 1957: the volume of Denck writings was out, happily, and Bornkamm was extraordinarily glad to include it; about a publication on which Parson Fellmann [I. R. Heinrich Bornkamm to Bender, March 9, 1957: about complications with Schneider about costs; mention the Denck writings, Parson Fellman, Ernst Crous; if Cornelius Krahn came to the Mennonite World Conference it would be good to have the Täufer-Akten conference at end of July, beginning of August. • • • REPLY, Bender to D. Heinrich Bornkamm, March 13, 1956: [apparently] very satisfied with Bornkamm’s management; mention that Parson Fellmann [I. R. Heinrich Bornkamm to Bender, August 27, 1957: unfortunately would soon need to draw on American reserves; amount in treasury at the beginning of August...(detail); mention Dr. Goeters [J. F. Gerhard Goeters ?], the Strassburg [Strasbourg] Täufer-Akten...; sorry he had been unable to participate in Mennonite World Conference for more than scarcely a half-day... (more about the business). {77} D.
