Administrative history
The Halbstadt Bergthaler Mennonite Church officially began in 1937. However, church activity in the area began as early as 1892. The group was a product of the schism of the Mennonites in the West Reserve when the Bergthaler and Sommerfelder groups emerged. The group met in the school buildings in Halbstadt and Strassberg. In 1937 the group purchased the school building together with the Rudnerweide Mennonite Church. The building was renovated and used jointly until 1954. Then a new meeting house was built in 1955 and again used jointly until 1969. By then there were only a few Rudnerweide families left and so they were absorbed in the one Bergthaler congregation. The congregation became an independent congregation from the Bergthaler Gemeinde in 1971. It left the Conference of Mennonites in Canada in 1994.
In 2012 the name was Halbstadt Mennonite Church.
