This small set of personal papers documents the Herrs' work in post World War II China with Mennonite Central Committee.  The papers include photographs, MCC "China Relief Notes" Newsletter (incomplete), a letter from relief workers in early 1950s China, and a videocassette copy of 16 mm film of their time in China.  The photographs and video depict MCC workers, Russian refugees, Chinese orphanage workers, distribution of supplies by MCC workers, and daily life in China.

These papers consist primarily of slides and photographic prints of John Z. Friesen's work in China with Mennonite Central Committee from 1946 to 1949.  Also included are photocopies of articles and documents pertaining to his relief work and to Mennonite refugees who escaped Russia through China.  The papers also include a 2007 interview with Mildred Friesen, John Z. Friesen's widow.
