This photo is of a farm belonging to a Mennonite elder in South Russia. On the right side of the photo behind a fence and behind some trees is a house. On the left side of the property is a long low building.There are two arched entrances to the property. A group of people is standing in front of the left entrance. A carriage pulled by two white horses is on an open field in the foreground. Two passengers and a driver are on the carriage. A man is standing behind the carriage.

Farming operation at the Wintergruen estate

This photo is of 21 teams of oxen and horses seeding and ploughing the land on the Wintergruen estate owned by Jacob Goossen. Goossen is sitting in his buggy with his matching team of horses on the far right hand side of the photo. The teams are lined up in four rows and have stopped to pose for a photo. With each working team is a man guiding the team. The land is flat with a clump of trees in the distance on the right hand side. This photo is in a cardboard frame which is 43 x 31 cm and will be placed in the oversized area. This photo was used in the book "Daydreams & Nightmares", p. 18.

Franz Martens yard

The Franz Martens yard (Wirtschaft) and house in Rückenau (Rueckenau) around 1900. Franz Martens is in the smaller carriage to the right and the engaged couple, Peter Martens and Helene Wieler, and Margarete Wieler, are in the larger carriage to the left. Helena Martens is standing at the gate and Anna Dueck is beside the smaller carriage.

This fonds consists of correspondence (1915-1942), letters of Nickolas Wiens and others (1887), an account book from the family estate in Russia covering 1889-1917 (most likely created by George N. Rempel's father), miscellaneous documents and information realted to the Taschtschenak and Brosdsky etstaes owned by Martens and Schroeder. This includes a plan lay-out of the Martens estate. Some of the correspondence has been transcribed into Latin letters. The transcriptions have the identification number corresponding to the copy of the original in the upper right hand side.
