History

Gerhard Ens was a well known educator, minister, historian, editor and radio host in southern Manitoba. As a young man he served as a conscinetious objector in the Second World War, taught at the MCI, and later became principle. He was ordanined into the ministry at the Blumenorter Mennonite church and after moving to Winnipeg to take on the editorship of Der Bote, continued to serve as minister in the Sargent Ave. Mennonite Church. Ens was one of the founders of the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society in 1958, and served for decades on the Mennonite Heritage Village board in Steinbach. For close to 30 years Ens also produced a Low German Mennonite history program aired on CFAM, Altona and its affiliates in Western Canada and Latin and South America.
