Graduated from Bethel Academy 1923. Attended Bethel College 1923-1925. Graduated from University of Arizona 1927. Master's degree from University of Arizona 1928. Ph. D. from Harvard University 1934.

Married Hulda Penner 7 June 1928, Newton, Kansas. She died in 1987.

Director of Gila Pueblo, Globe, Arizona, 1930-1937.

Director of Arizona State Museum at University of Arizona 1938-1964. Professor of anthropology 1964-1980.

Married Agnese Nelms Lindley 6 July 1990.

Died 5 Dec 1992, Tucson, Arizona.
