Scope note(s)

  • Built in 1932 on the Dniepr River above Zaporizhia, the dam became an icon of Soviet patriotism and ingenuity as well as a crucial source of hyrdroelectricity for industry. The central section was destroyed by the retreating Soviet army in 1941, and rebuilt by the occupying Germans. It was then destroyed by the retreating German army in 1943, and rebuit by the Soviets beginning in 1944.

Flooding of the village of Einlage (Kitchkas)

This photo shows a striped pole in the foreground and houses in the background partially submerged. The large building centre in the background is the Martens Mill. This photo is the second in a series of 3 when combined shows the flooding of the village of Einlage after the Dneproges Hydroelectric dam was built. Residents reestablished the village to the west of the site.
