Biographical history

David Wiens was born on September 21, 1920 in the lower village of Alexandrodar in the Kuban settlement to Abraham Wiens and Katherina Heinrichs. The family came to Canada in 1925 when David was 4 1/2 and made their home in Warren, Manitoba. In 1930 David's mother, Katherina Wiens died. Abraham married Maria Schellenberg in 1933. David Wiens graduated from St. John's College in Winnipeg in 1942 and served with the Canadian Army overseas in the Canadian Intelligence Corps 1942-1946. While overseas he married Betty Bagot in England on September 18, 1943.
After the war David obtained an Education diploma in 1947 and taught High School at St. John's College in Winnipeg until 1950 when he rejoined the army serving in various intelligence capacities. After retirement he was employed as a translator with the Department of National Defense. David Wiens also had a great interest in family history and genealogy. He died in Ottawa on November 22, 2017.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence and documents collected, written and received by David Wiens. Contained within in the fonds is genealogical material (1990), correspondence collected from various people (1962-1968) and correspondence written and received (1990-1997) as well as the Schellenberg genealogy/compiled by Maria (Schellenberg) Wiens (1998). All of the correspondence included is either from or to people in either the former USSR or Canada. Some of the people with whom David corresponded with were George Harder, Herb Giesbrecht, Jacob Heinrichs, Cornelius Heinrichs and Hans Wiens. The material is all related to David's family history and genealogy research.
