Biographical history

David A. (D. A.) Yoder was born on October 14, 1883 near Nappanee, Indiana  to Peter and Mary Fretz Yoder.  Yoder graduated Wakarusa High School in 1904 and was ordained a Mennonite minister at Holdeman Mennonite Church at age 23.  Yoder also taught school and farmed.  Yoder married Frances Ferguson in 1906, and together they had three children: Dale, Lowell, and Lois.

Yoder was ordained a Mennonite bishop September 1, 1910 at Yellow Creek Frame Mennonite Church.  He served at Olive Mennonite Church from 1910 to 1949, and at Holdeman Mennonite Church from 1914 to 1949.  Yoder also served as bishop of Prairie Street Mennonite Church for 30 years.

Yoder was a member of the Mennonite Board of Education from 1912 to 1950 (and an honorary member from 1950 to 1971), as vice president from 1918 to 1920 and president from 1928 to 1948.

Yoder also served for many years on the Executive Committee of the Indiana - Michigan Mennonite Conference and held the position of moderator and assistant moderator.  Yoder served on the Mennonite General Conference Executive Committee as well, holding the position of moderator for one biennium.

Yoder died January 26, 1980.
