Biographical history

D. Paul Miller was born in Kansas in 1917. He was one of five children born to a conservative Mennonite minister (later bishop) and his wife. He attended Hesston College and Goshen College and worked as a teacher for several years.

A conscientious objector, Miller was inducted into Sidling Hill Camp (CPS No. 20) in 1942, where he worked for the forestry department. He was transferred nine months later to Farnhurst, Delaware / Delaware State Hospital (CPS No. 58), where he worked with the mentally ill. He was discharged in 1946.

He attended graduate school at the University of Nebraska, earning a PhD in sociology. He taught at a number of midwestern universities, including Illinois Wesleyan University.

Miller was instrumental in gathering and preserving the history of CPS Camp No. 58, as well as organizing circle letters and a 50th reunion in 1992.
