Blumenthal Old Colony German School and Church

The village of Blumenthal in the Hague-Osler Mennonite Reserve was settled in 1898. Shortly after 1900, the German school in the photo was built. It also served as the church. The school closed in 1930 after the Government of Saskatchewan forced the community to attend classes in an English speaking public school. Leo Driedger photographed this school when he did his M.A. on Old Colony Mennonites.

Written on reverse: The former Old Colony School house in the Village of Blumenthal, north of Saskatoon. Up to late 1950s it was used as a church house. The architecture ie. the windows in attic, show it as a bldg from Old Colony times. The Brauns may have attended church, the children school here.
