Part of COE Slide Presentation - "The Bloody Theatre or Martyrs Mirror"
Simon den Kramer (Simon the Shopkeeper), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake in 1553 (exact date unknown) outside the town of Bergen op Zoom, Dutch province of North Brabant. Van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, which is the only source concerning this martyr, relates that Simon was a market vendor (kramer), and while standing near his stall refused to give homage to the Roman Catholic "idol" (probably the Holy Sacrament passing in a procession), whereupon he was arrested. Van Braght also relates that the sheriff (drossaert), upon coming home from the execution, fell ill and died soon after, filled with doubt whether Simon's execution was just.
