Biographical history

Adolf W. Neufeld was born 8 January 1920, in Inman, Kansas, to Peter T. Neufeld and Helena D. Wiens Neufeld. He attended Bethel Mennonite Church, Inman, throughout his life. Adolf served for four years in CPS during World War II, in Henry, Illinois; Clear Spring Maryland; Denison, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Three Rivers, California. After the war he married Wanda Reber on 28 September 1949. Adolf ran Inman Electric Co. with Nick Martens for many years in Inman, Kansas. Later he and Wanda opened and ran A&W Electronics.

Wanda Reber Neufeld was born 19 April 1928, in Sedgwick, Kansas, to Gilbert Reber and Lola Shomber Reber. Prior to her marriage to Adolf she worked at Bethel Hospital in Newton.

Adolf and Wanda volunteered together for many service activities. Both served extensively with Mennonite Disaster Service, including not only relief work but also making presentations, staffing booths at events, and serving on the Kansas executive committee. They helped with maintenance and worked in the kitchen at Camp Mennoscah in the summers from 1950 to 2009. They did electrical work on church construction projects around the region. They also worked with lay witness programs and on a variety of projects with Mennonite Central Committee (canning, making verenike, making draft items, sewing school kit bags, etc.). Adolf was extensively involved with historical activities in the church and community.

Wanda passed away on 28 November 2010 and Adolf on13 July 2013. They had one daughter, Marilyn Marshal

The documents were donated by Adolf Neufeld on 1 September 1995. The slides were brought to the MLA by Allen Jantz on 7 July 2021

Scope and content

The documents in the collection consist almost entirely of minutes, correspondence, and newsletters related to their work with Mennonite Disaster Service. The remainder of the collection is almost entirely composed of slides, including many during World War II of Adolph’s CPS locations and some travel during the war. Others relate to other service work, especially various MDS work trips.
