File 6 - A.J. Schultz memoirs and reflections

Allen J. Schultz, missionary and teacher, was born on his parents farm near Wellesle, Ontario on March 3, 1891. His parents were Moses John and Barbara (nee Burgmann) Schultz. He was the oldest of five children and had two brothers and two sisters. Schultz attended public schools near Wellesley and then studied at Toronto Bible College, graduating in 1913. That same year he married Alice Leach of Adair, Michigan on November 27th. Their marriage produced four children, the oldest of which died of meningitis shortly after birth. Schultz had been baptized as an infant in the Lutheran church of his parents. As an adult he was rebaptized by immersion in 1917. During his life he worked as a missionary in Africa during World War I. He was very ecumenical in his religious identity and associations and taught Bible in 31 denominations. He was active during the era of camp meetings at Port Burwell and Chesley Lake, Ontario. There was a tabernacle built at Chesley Lake which he bought the land around and later sold to the Mennonite Chesley Lake Camp Association in 1947. Throughout his life he maintained an active correspondence with a large network of friends and family. Allen J. Schultz died in January 1981.
