Scope and content

During the early decades after the origin in the 1520s, the Anabaptists were severely persecuted by the official churches of Europe. Many Anabaptists came to believe that suffering for Christ was an essential element of their faith. Suffering was a natural continuation of the life of the earliest Christians and of Christ himself. The Anabaptists often accepted persecution with optimistic, joyful attitudes rather than with fatalism or resignation.
