Christian Neff organized and promoted the first world meeting of Mennonites. Neff was pastor of the Mennonite congregation of Weierhof, Germany and president of the Conference of South German Mennonites. He proposed a worldwide gathering to his own conference, which approved the idea and sent out invitations to Mennonites in Europe and North America to come to Basel, Switzerland, in 1925 to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of the beginning of Swiss Anabaptism.
